Eastborough club may not make centenary celebrations
Fri 19th Feb, 2010 • Dewsbury Reporter
A Working Men's Club due to celebrate its centenary later this year could be forced to close before its big day.
The steward of struggling Eastborough WMC said the club could only keep going for another three months unless things improved. It means the Battye Street club might not reach its centenary in November.Mark Jackson, who has been club steward since 2002, said: "Like many other clubs with this economic climate, things aren't particularly great for us.
"The onset of the smoking ban was a major blow, we lost £800 a week straight away". Mr Jackson, 41, who lives above the club with his wife, said he would be devastated if it closed.
The banning of indoor smoking everywhere is damaging the viability of many licensed premises where people wish to smoke.
