Colchester sees record number of pub closures
Mon 8th Feb, 2010 • Daily Gazette
A record number of pubs in Colchester closed their doors in January and industry leaders say the trend is set to continue. Around seven pubs in the town closed last month with dozens more now up for sale or changing hands. Marion King, sales director of wine, spirit and beer wholesalers, G&G Gallo, and president of the Colchester Licensed Victualler’s Association, said she believed the trend was a “downward spiral”. She said: “It started with the smoking ban which totally killed the pubs." It is thought around 11 pubs are closing in Essex every week.
The banning of indoor smoking everywhere is damaging the viability of many licensed premises where people wish to smoke.
